Success Story- Rudrapur

Health is wealth

Gopal Nagar, a small and serene village situated in the Rudrapur city of Uttarakhand, is home to hardworking people who have been facing significant financial challenges. Despite engaging in laborious daily work, the villagers struggle to make ends meet due to limited earnings. As a result, they are unable to afford more than the basic necessities of life, such as food and education for their children. Unfortunately, their financial struggles have led to neglect of their health and well-being. In addition, the absence of healthcare facilities and health camps in the village further exacerbates their hardships, depriving them of easy access to essential medical services.

During the Village Development Committee (VDC) meeting, Basanti, an Anganwadi teacher, and the Radhe Radhe (SHG) group of women shared their concerns about the community's well-being. They talked about the health problems faced by the villagers who couldn't afford treatment. The villagers often put their basic needs first and couldn't afford proper healthcare. The committee recognized these challenges and proposed organizing a monthly medical health camp as a solution.

On March 2, 2024, the ‘Radhe Radhe’ group and 20 community representatives met with Dr. Kailash, the head of the Primary Health Center (PHC), to propose a monthly health camp in Gopal Nagar. They then met with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) on March 16, 2024, and agreed on bi-monthly health camps on the 2nd and 14th of every month to provide regular healthcare services to the residents of Gopal Nagar.

On May 14, 2024, Dr. Kailash and `The Hans Foundation` spearheaded the first health camp in Gopal Nagar, offering vital services such as thorough check-ups, treatments for prevalent health issues, and distribution of essential medications. Special attention was given to women's and young girls' healthcare needs. The initiative has benefitted 189 individuals and has been held six times.

The success of this healthcare initiative stands as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of community-driven initiatives, showcasing the profound impact of collective action and self-help in laying the foundations for a healthier and more resilient future for the people of Gopal Nagar.
